Making Comics with DMC
 
Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and Darryl DMC McDanielsWhen I was a child growing up in the South Bronx, many of my grammar school friends would pay me 50¢ to draw them comic books. I'd stay up late drawing these pages and proudly bring them to school the next day for my happy customers. I always wanted to grow up and draw comics. I would doodle on the side of my notebooks in high school and hand draw posters for concerts and parties in college way before Adobe made Photoshop and Illustrator. I loved comic book art so much that I had the chance to curate two art shows for Marvel (Santerians: The Art of Joe Quesada and Marvelous Color) that I exhibited at the old CCCADI gallery in Columbus Circle.

Last year my good friend Rigg Morales brought me face to face with one of my favorite hip-hop artists of all time, Darryl DMC McDaniels of Run DMC. I listened to Run DMC in junior high school and wore Adidas outfits in high school. Having the chance to work with DMC to make a comic book would fulfill two dreams in one shot. The three of us and DMC's manager Erik Blam came together under DMC's leadership to start our very own imprint.

1 1/2 years later we finished our first full length graphic novel and I'm so proud of the work that all of these artists produced under our new publishing company Darryl Makes Comics. It's a start-up, or as we call it, a labor of love. I still run Somos Arte designing websites, branding, producing advertorials and all the other fantastic services we offer, but I also take time when I'm not building Lego set's with my son or visiting art galleries with my fiancé to work on this amazing project.

I don't know whatever happened to those comics I drew back in the 1980s, but I can tell you that I still have my childhood collection of comics in plastic bags that I refer to now ever so often as I help DMC build this new comic book universe of ours.

I wouldn't have it any other way because it's like that and that's the way it is.

COVERGIRL Honors Latina Breast Cancer Survivors

Breast Cancer AwarenessDo you know any Latina breast cancer survivors? If you do, now is your chance to honor and celebrate their bravery. COVERGIRL® will be selecting four Latinas to receive a glamorous makeover, participate in a photo shoot and be interviewed in Spanish for a special video also produced by Somos Arte as part of an advertorial that will be printed in Siempre Mujer Magazine and their website.


Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Latinas? This is according to the number of newest cases of breast cancer that developed from 2004-2008. In 2012 it was estimated that 17,100 new cases of breast cancer would occur and 2,400 Latinas would die from breast cancer (Source: Susan G. Komen | Breast Cancer Statistics).

Now COVERGIRL® is joining the fight against breast cancer amongst Latinas and as part of an advertorial Somos Arte is producing, COVERGIRL® will make a donation towards finding a cure.

Let's recognize the survivors of breast cancer and continue to raise awareness and fight for a cure to this disease!

New York City based creative services studio Somos Arte announces an open CASTING CALL* for a USPS magazine advertorial. Somos Arte has produced advertorials for Olay, COVERGIRL and Pantene. We are looking for Latinas in the New York metropolitan area, but this casting call is not strictly limited to New York City residents. Residents of Long Island, Upstate New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and beyond may also apply. However please note, we are not responsible for travel accommodations. Selected models are responsible for their own transportation to and from the designated photo shoot location (TBA). Women must be between the age of 25 and 35 to apply. Hair length should be medium to long. Complexion should be healthy and free from acne/blemishes. Only one (1) woman will be cast and be featured in Siempre Mujer, a national women’s beauty/lifestyle publicationone advertorial. The selected model will pose alongside Vanessa DeLeon of Vanessa DeLeon Associates. The photo shoot is an all day commitment tentatively scheduled for late May on a week day.
